One evening, I was very tired in bed when the phone suddenly rang and a voice asked, in Italian, "Is that the book shop in via del Corso?" I'm Italian and I spoke to her in Italian and told her it was a London number. I didn't know why, but I had this strange feeling. Her voice was so familiar. Anyway I just said, "Cristina, is that you?" We didn't believe it. We were friends in Italy and we worked together- I moved to London five years ago and we lost touch. She didn't have my new phone number because I have moved several times since I first came to England. It was so strange. She dialled the number of a book shop in Italy and for some reason my phone rang in London! We are going to meet soon to celebrate the happy coincidence. I am very excited about the reunion.
1) When the phone suddenly rang: this action interrupted the other one (I was very tired in bed)
2)I'm Italian and I spoke to her in Italian and told...(Being Italian is something that doesn't change. However, for the sequence of actions the person is using past simple)
3)I didnt know//I don't know why. Both are possible. Why? It's ambiguous. Either she didnt know at that moment, or still doesn't know.
4)Her voice was so familiar: Sequence of action, the story is told in the past simple
5)We didn't believe/We couldn't believe it: sequence of action (the auxiliary can is also possible, actually is more common)
6) We were friends and we worked together: sequence of action
7)She didn't have my new phone number: sequence of action
8)I have moved several times since I first came to England: Present perfect, an action that stopped recently but still affects the present
9)We are going to meet/We will meet soon. Both are possible because we don't have more evidence about the event. (Have they bought the tickets? Do we know the exact date that they are meeting?)
10) I am very excited about the reunion. Present simple is the only option. Let's suppose we put past (I was very excited) that would imply that the reunion already happened!
If you have any further doubts, post them here!
